As part of our #WhySI campaign on why Southern Illinois is a great place to live, work, and do business, we spoke with Sarah and Jeremy Farr, the owners of Pecheken Ventures.
Sarah and Jeremy Farr are the owners of Pecheken Ventures LLC (pronounced Peachy-Keen). They relocated to Southern Illinois from Central Texas in May 2022 after learning about the area from close friends who had moved to Cobden following the pandemic. After just one visit to Southern Illinois in April 2021, they knew they wanted to make it their home and pursue their dream of opening a glamping business. While their vision evolved over time, their goal remained constant: to create a space where people could slow down and enjoy time together.
In November 2024, they opened their first short-term vacation rental—The Dome at Blueberry Hill—located in Cobden, Illinois. This geodesic dome sits on two secluded acres, just two miles northeast of the Village of Cobden and along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Fully insulated with heating and air conditioning, The Dome provides a comfortable stay year-round. Nestled among the trees and overlooking rolling hills and a cow pasture, the property also features a vintage game barn, which guests have full access to during their stay. The barn includes a covered picnic area, a cozy sitting space, numerous board games, and even a Pac-Man machine. To ensure an enjoyable experience for all, the property also offers two outdoor swinging areas and a scavenger hunt.
Inside, The Dome maximizes its 365-square-foot space with thoughtful amenities. It features a fully stocked kitchenette, a luxurious indoor bathroom, a washer/dryer combo, a queen bed in the sleeping loft, a queen bed on the main level, and a comfortable seating and dining area. The Farrs assembled the dome themselves—sharing the process on social media—and worked with local contractors and vendors to complete the interior.
Now, after nearly four months in business, they have found immense joy in hosting and hearing about guests’ magical experiences while visiting Southern Illinois.
Why do you love running a business in Southern Illinois?
The support from our community has been incredible. From local contractors and metal fabricators to all the vendors in between, we have been met with kindness and generosity every step of the way. This project would not have been possible without the hard work of our contractors and the help of several close friends and neighbors who were there for us throughout the building process.
We also love being part of the shop-local culture and do what we can to contribute. We provide our guests with locally made soap, goat’s milk lotion, room spray, coffee, seasonings, honey, and even cheesecake for special occasions. Collaborating with these local vendors has not only helped our business through social media exposure but has also allowed us to support other small businesses by introducing their products to guests traveling from outside the area.

Why do you love living in Southern Illinois?
There are so many reasons we love living in Southern Illinois!
One of the biggest is experiencing all four seasons. It may sound simple, but coming from Texas, where the weather is mostly just hot or cold, getting to truly enjoy each season has been a joy. Fall in Southern Illinois is especially magical—it’s definitely our favorite!
We also appreciate the slower pace of life. Coming from a densely populated area, we’ve grown to love small-town living even more, especially the opportunities our children have had in a smaller school setting.
One of our favorite things to do is play tourist, experiencing the same attractions our guests enjoy. It’s been such a fun way to explore the area and try new things! The natural beauty of Southern Illinois and the endless outdoor opportunities make it an incredible place to live. Some of our favorites include the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, Giant City, hiking in the Shawnee National Forest, and exploring local small towns.
But above all, what makes Southern Illinois truly special is the people and the strong sense of community. That’s what makes this place feel like home.
