SI Community Colleges: Building Future Workforce

March 11, 2024

Southern Illinois is served by four community colleges spread across the region, making significant strides in preparing the workforce for the future. These educational institutions – John A. Logan College, Rend Lake College, Shawnee Community College, and Southeastern Illinois College – are not only shaping the academic landscape but are also playing a crucial role in the economic development of the area.

  1. Collaborative Programs Foster Regional Strength: Recognizing the power of collaboration, the four community colleges have joined forces to create a regional network that maximizes resources and expertise. Through shared initiatives students can gain a diverse educational experience tailored to their career goals.
  2. Cutting-Edge Programs for In-Demand Fields: The colleges are proactively responding to the job market by offering programs in high-demand fields. From advanced manufacturing and welding to information technology and nursing, the curriculums are designed to align with the evolving needs of the regional economy.
  3. Technology Integration for 21st Century Skills: Understanding the pivotal role technology plays in the modern workforce, these community colleges are investing heavily in state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge equipment. One example is the Southern Illinois Manufacturing Academy (SIMA) which will be completed by this fall.

"This exciting project will feature high-demand industry skills training for well-paying manufacturing jobs," said Rend Lake College’s Vice President of Instruction and Student Affairs, Lori Ragland. "It will serve new and incumbent workers through hands-on application to validate learned skills. SIMA will include a working manufacturing environment where participants will demonstrate competencies based on industry criteria. The training will be a direct correlation to the feedback received from employers in the manufacturing sector.

  1. Industry Partnerships for Real-World Experience: Recognizing the value of practical experience, the community colleges have forged strong partnerships with local industries. Internship programs and apprenticeships allow students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, creating a seamless transition from academia to the workforce. The Highway Construction Careers Training Program at Shawnee Community College (SCC) is a great example of real-world experience while also helping communities in Southern Illinois.

"The Highway Construction Careers Training Program is a win-win for this region. People who live here receive excellent training, which prepares them for well-paying career opportunities right here at home," said Kristy Stephenson, Shawnee Community College Dean of Career and Technology.

"We appreciate the opportunity. Shawnee Community College and Illinois Department of Transportation have put us in a good position to be successful and take care of the community," said new father and recent graduate Akeem Mercer.

As the community colleges in Southern Illinois continue to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the workforce, they remain steadfast in their commitment to shaping not only the academic journey of their students but also the economic landscape of the region. Through collaboration and innovation, they are indeed laying the foundation for a brighter future for both individuals and the communities they serve.
