On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Alumni Association Courtyard Tent on Southern Illinois University's campus became the stage for the launch of Salukis Build Here, a new initiative encouraging SIU alumni to start, relocate, or expand businesses in Carbondale and Southern Illinois. The program also invites other communities across the region to collaborate in supporting alumni entrepreneurs.

The initiative is a partnership of the SIU Foundation, SIU Alumni Association, Southern Illinois Now (SI Now), the City of Carbondale, Carbondale Main Street, and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.

“Salukis Build Here celebrates alumni-owned businesses already thriving in Carbondale and throughout Southern Illinois while extending an enthusiastic invitation for other Salukis to join us,” said Deb Barnett, executive director of SI Now. “You have a university, a community and an entire region here to welcome and support you.”

SIU Chancellor Austin A. Lane highlighted the momentum in Carbondale and the surrounding region, emphasizing how alumni and community partnerships strengthen both the university and the local economy. Alumni like Scott Moller, co-owner of Hangar 9, echoed that sentiment, citing the city’s support for new and growing businesses.

Mayor Carolin Harvey noted that nearly 150 alumni-owned businesses operate in Carbondale, and over 1000 alumni-owned business operate in the Southern Illinois region, showcasing the creativity and impact of SIUC graduates. Partners emphasized collaboration and community support, inviting the public to a celebration at Hangar 9 on October 23 featuring alumni-owned businesses, food vendors, and networking opportunities.

The launch, marked by a formal proclamation signed by all partners, kicks off just ahead of SIU’s Homecoming weekend, including a Halloween street festival and the annual Saluki football game and tailgate.
