Why SI: Christian Gillespie — Building Hope, Harmony, and Healing in Southern Illinois
January 27, 2026

When Dr. Christian Hope Gillespie talks about her work, it’s impossible not to feel the weight—and the warmth—of her calling. Founder of Hope and Harmony Wellness Group (HHWG), Christian has created a space where mental health, faith, and culture intersect, not in tension, but in conversation. Named after her mother, Hope, and her oldest daughter, Harmony, HHWG reflects her mission: to cultivate spaces where healing, understanding, and empowerment flourish.

Christian’s journey to Southern Illinois and her own practice began in unlikely places. As Director of Mental Health Operations and Clinical Services overseeing mental health across all thirty state correctional facilities in Illinois, she carried immense responsibility. Yet, it was this high-pressure role that illuminated the gap she wanted to fill—a gap between mental health services and the communities they serve. “I know there are many who never plan to step foot into a therapy room because of fear, lack of access, mistrust, or stigma. They are my loved ones, my friends, my neighbors, and my calling,” she explains.

At HHWG, Christian works tirelessly to bridge the gap between therapy and faith, offering counseling, workshops, trainings, and community conversations that affirm both spiritual and psychological well-being. Here, therapy is collaborative, relational, and culturally informed—helping clients reclaim hope, purpose, and agency while addressing trauma, stress, and relational challenges.

But why Southern Illinois? Christian first arrived in Carbondale in 2007 as a first-generation, low-income student pursuing her doctorate in counseling psychology at SIUC. With mentorship from Dr. Thomas Parham, she navigated the rigorous program and her own self-doubt, riding the so-called “Freedom Train” of guidance for exceptional students of color. What she didn’t expect was to fall in love with a place, a community, and ultimately, a life she would build here. “I did not anticipate falling in love with a community that felt small yet expansive, where everyone is only a few degrees apart,” she recalls. She also fell in love with her future husband, started a family, and grew roots in the church community. Southern Illinois became more than a place of education—it became home.

The people and resources of Southern Illinois have been instrumental in Christian’s success. Churches, local agencies, and community organizations partnered with HHWG to reduce stigma around mental health, creating programs that reach beyond the therapy room. The Illinois Small Business Development Center provided guidance to translate her clinical expertise into a sustainable practice. And the everyday residents—neighbors, friends, clients—have been her sounding board, her cheerleaders, and her partners in transformation.

Christian’s favorite part of running a business here? Watching transformation in real time. “There is a closeness in Southern Illinois that allows healing to feel visible and connected,” she says. “Seeing someone move from surviving to reclaiming hope, watching skills meet insight, and hope and joy re-enter a life dulled by trauma—it’s luminous work.”

Outside the therapy room, Christian cherishes the simple joys of Southern Illinois: the local cafes where she works over coffee, the lakes and trails that offer quiet reflection, the vineyards and winding roads that make every drive an adventure. For Christian, the region is not just a backdrop—it’s an active participant in the work of growth and community wellness.

Through Hope and Harmony Wellness Group, Christian Gillespie has proven that mental health care can be deeply human, culturally attuned, and spiritually affirming. And in Southern Illinois, she has found a place where hope, harmony, and healing don’t just live—they thrive.
